exterior patio kitchen
How will you use it? What type of events do you plan to have? How many people will be using it? You might ask for input from them too. Will you be dining, relaxing, reading, cooking, or even partying? All of these primary uses should be written down so you can prioritize them and list the additional items you may need to be able to utilize fully. When will you use your patio? At first, that may be a strange question to ask, but it's legitimate. Will you use it year round? in the morning or late afternoon? These questions are important because your home's orientation and whether you want morning shade or sun and afternoon shade or sun. Will you want to use the patio during a rainstorm? or just for shade on sunny days. That spells out the primary differences between patio covers (protection from rain or sun). Are you planning to enclose your patio? If so, then will you be looking into sun room or screen room enclosure. You may be able to plan for an easy conversion from a patio cover to a sun room in the future. Planning on cooking outside? Obviously, cooking outdoors can range from coals on a hibachi to a weber up to propane gas grills and to a fully integrated range of food prep areas. The possibilities are endless with outdoor kitchens, but if you don't plan early, you won't know what questions to ask your estimator.
What style elements are right for your patio?
When it comes to style, many opinions are available. For example take a look at the photo on this page. You'll notice that this beautiful pergola fits really well with this home. The home is stucco with white trim around the windows and gutters. Anattached pergola from deeply embossed aluminum (no, this wood really!) with the corbel cut end rafters and bold, substantial columns. Besides complementing the home style, the patio cover fits really well in this space too. It's not too tall to become overbearing; it covers the most usable area of the patio (about 450 square feet) and is accessible right from the breakfast room. You'll notice a few more things that planning ahead solved. The large built in gas grill with food prep areas, wet bar, and extra storage is what this client wanted. You can see the large hood to exhaust the grill smoke. They also had speakers installed to listen to their favorite music while relaxing and entertaining their guests. They spend a lot of time outdoors but primarily on sunny days, thus the pergola choice. They get nice afternoon shade while not making the home too dark. A well thought-out plan made all this possible.
